Our board members are keen to forge close collaborations with the organisations we back. Ensuring the success of a project relies on both parties understanding its aims, fully committing to its journey, celebrating achievements together, and undertaking comprehensive reviews. We appreciate that measuring the success of road safety schemes can be a bit tricky, but we’re always here to offer advice on suitable metrics and evaluation approaches.
About You
We welcome applications from registered charities, road safety organisations, universities and groups with a clearly defined and well-planned project. We look for all of the following characteristics in the organisations and projects that we fund:
- Awareness of the bigger picture
- Sector knowledge and expertise
- Commitment to sharing and learning
- A proven track record
- Direct benefits to a particular group (for example: vulnerable road users, older drivers)
How can we help you?
We aim to contribute to improving the safety of all road users by making grants of up to £10,000 for innovative road safety projects.
All applications are assessed by our Trustees and each is taken on its own merit. It is unlikely that they will consider applications that seek to extend core funding or those previously funded by a statutory agency. All applications should include a plan, timeline and proposed budget for the project.
What we fund
We welcome applications for innovative road safety projects from community groups, registered charities, foundations, professional bodies, road safety organisations, road safety partnerships, schools and universities. Projects should aim to increase road safety for all road users through research, education, engineering or enforcement.
Where appropriate the Trustees will require copies of applicant’s safeguarding and health and safety policies, together with copies of their annual accounts. To be eligible to receive a grant the applicant must be based in the UK, Channel Islands or the Isle of Man.
The Trustees encourage applications that seek match funding for partnership-based road safety projects, activities or initiatives, where the outcome of the project is greater than could be achieved by the GEM Charity grant alone.
We will not award grants to projects that do not demonstrate a road safety benefit to the wider community, are from a political party or are contrary to the relevant legislation regarding equal opportunities such as the Equality Act 2010.

We are currently open to applications. The next funding round closes on 31st December 2024.
